Golden Rams blitz Benedict to stay tied for SIAC East Division lead

ALBANY, Ga.- Senior wide receiver Devonta Osborne celebrated his last home game by catching six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to a 35-9 win over the Benedict College Tigers. With the victory, ASU improves to 5-3 overall, 4-1 in the SIAC and 3-0 in the SIAC East Division. The Golden Rams remain tied atop the standings with Fort Valley State, who is also 3-0.

Benedict, who is coached by former ASU head coach James "Mike" White, falls to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the SIAC East.

The two teams battled to a first quarter tie with neither able to generate points. Albany State's "Gold Rush" Offense finally started producing in the second quarter. At the 13:34 mark, Jarvis Small scampered 15 yards for a touchdown and ended an 8-play, 71-yard drive that used 4:10. Zachary Gayden-Holley added a PAT, and ASU led 7-0.

Two minutes later, a miscue on a Benedict punt attempt resulted in a team safety for Albany State and a 9-0 edge. That play also ignited a 5-play, 68-yard drive in 2:45 that was capped with a 33-yard pass play between quarterback Caleb Edmonds and Osborne. The touchdown gave ASU a 16-0 lead that it would take into halftime.

Benedict scored the only points of the third quarter when it connected on a 19-yard field goal to cut its deficit to 16-3. ASU kicker Stefan Whitehead made a field goal of his own with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter to increase the Golden Rams' advantage to 19-3.

The fourth period continued to produce offense for both teams, but Albany State was able to pull away. At the 8:03 mark, Edmonds rushed for a 47-yard touchdown to give ASU a commanding 26-3 lead. The drive only used two plays and 50 yards in 40 seconds.

The Tigers would answer Edmonds' score with a 30-yard touchdown to cut their deficit to 26-9. BC went for a two-point conversion, but Albany State's Zavondric Shingleton intercepted the pass and returned it 97 yards for a score to give the Golden Rams a 28-9 edge with 5:56 left in the game.

Three minutes later, Mack Green ended Albany State's scoring parade by rushing 23 yards for a touchdown. The drive went five plays and 44 yards in 3:07.

Small finished with 106 yards on 17 carries. Edmonds was 12-of-26 passing for 182 yards, and he also rushed six times for 80 yards. The Albany State offense generated 425 yards of total offense.
