BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA- Junior Mecca Frost scored 11 of her 13 points from the free throw line to lead the Albany State Lady Rams past the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers 70-58 in the semifinal round of the 2014 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. With the win, ASU, the East Division champion and tournament's No. 1 seed from that side, advance to Saturday's championship game to face either Tuskegee or Benedict.
The Lady Rams, currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II South Regional Rankings, improve to 21-5 overall. Clark Atlanta drops to 19-8.
Albany State actually trailed for most of the first half. Clark Atlanta held five-point leads on three separate occasions. ASU trailed 29-25 at intermission.
In the second half, CAU increased its lead to nine, 42-33, at the 15:17 mark. The Lady Rams answered with a dominant 14-0 run over the next 4:12 to take a 47-42 advantage. Another 11-3 run provided ASU with 58-45 with 6:15 left in regulation.
Albany State held its largest lead at 63-49 with 3:33 left to play.
Keidra Green added 12 points, Kourtney Alexander netted 11 and Artisha Holston canned 10 to join Frost in double figures. Holston and Alexander also recorded eight and seven rebounds respectively. Frost and Alexander also had four assists apiece.
The Lady Rams shot 26-63 (41.3%) from the field, 2-5 (40.0%) from three-point range, and 16-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line. They forced 20 CAU turnovers and outscored them 42-13 in the paint. Albany State also recorded 13 steals.
Albany State will compete in the SIAC Championship game on Saturday, March 8th at 5 p.m.
