Lady Rams take first place of SIAC East with win over Benedict

Box Score COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA- Point guard Mecca Frost scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 48-43 victory over the Benedict Lady Tigers. With the win, ASU improves to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the SIAC and take over sole possession of first place in the SIAC East Division. Benedict falls to 15-7, 9-3.

In a defensive duel, both teams found points to come by thanks to the stingy defense on both sides of the ball. Frost actually gave her team the early lead by scoring the team's first seven points of the game. Despite foul trouble and cold shooting, Albany State still led 23-20 at halftime.

In the second half, defense continued to be the theme of the game. Both teams found shots hard to come by, and making them was more difficult. The Lady Tigers took their first lead of the game at 33-32 with 10:38 left to play. Kourtney Alexander gave ASU the advantage again with a three-pointer at 9:54 mark. The Lady Rams would not trail again, outscoring Benedict 15-11 down the stretch.

Alexander and Artisha Holston added eight points apiece for the Lady Rams. Holston also led Albany State with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Rams shot 16-48 (33.3%) from the field, 5-14 (35.7%) from three-point range and 11-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line. They forced Benedict into 22 turnovers and held the team to 31.1% shooting.

Albany State returns to action on Monday, February 10th when they travel to Augusta, Georgia to face the Paine College Lady Lions. The Lady Rams won the first meeting in Albany 82-69. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
