Lady Rams fall to GSW in season opener

Albany, GA- Sophomore Artisha Holston scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but the Albany State Lady Rams dropped their season opener to the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes, 72-55. The game was played in the 2014 SIAC-Peach Belt Classic. While ASU falls to 0-1 on the season, Georgia Southwestern improves to 3-0.
 
The game was close in the first half before the Lady Hurricane went on a run. Trailing only 18-14 at the 9:22 mark, the Lady Rams went cold from the field and fell behind by double digits. When halftime arrived, Albany State trailed 36-21.
 
In the second half, ASU could never find its rhythm or the basket. The deficit continued to grow. With 5:17 remaining in the contest, Albany State was behind by 25, 64-39. A small Lady Ram deficit in the final minutes helped close the gap.
 
Shanice Williams recorded seven points and six rebounds for Albany State. Jillian Anderson led the team with eight rebounds and chipped in with five points.
 
The Lady Rams shot 22 of 57 (38.6) from the field, 0-6 from three-point range, and 11 of 21 (52.4) from the free throw line. They also committed 33 turnovers.
 
Albany State returns to action on Sunday, November 30th on the final day of the SIAC-Peach Belt Challenge. The Lady Rams will take on Columbus State University. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at the ASU HPER Gymnasium.
