Golden Rams win second straight game

Justin Wilcox
Box Score Senior guard Justin Wilcox recorded game-highs of 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Albany State Golden Rams past the Claflin University Panthers, 74-66.  It is the second straight win for Albany State.  With the victory, the Golden Rams improve to 4-11 overall, 3-6 in the SIAC.  Claflin falls to 6-11, 4-5.

The Golden Rams only trailed once in the game, and that was when Claflin led 2-0 at the 18:38 mark of the first half.  A three-pointer by senior guard Jaren Harris gave Albany State the lead at 3-2 and set the tone for what would turn out to be a solid night for the Golden Rams.  Ahead 22-20 with 5:00 left in the half, Albany State went on a 12-5 run to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.

The Golden Rams, who made 13 of 25 three-pointers for the game, used their hot shooting from behind the arc to distance themselves from the Panthers.  A trey by Wilcox gave ASU its’ biggest lead of the night, 55-37, with 12:20 left in the game.  Claflin did make a run to get back in the contest, but the Golden Rams used timely baskets and pressure defense to keep the Panthers at bay and claim victory.

Harris scored 17 points, and senior guard Andrew Covin added 13 points to join Wilcox in double figures.  Michael Jones led the Panthers with 17 points.

The Golden Rams return to action when they travel to Mount Vernon, Georgia to take on Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday, January 29th.  Tip-off time is slated for 7 p.m.
