Two Golden Rams receive SIAC superlative honors

Two Albany State University Golden Rams have been selected for superlative honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) after their outstanding performances against Lane College in the Music City Classic on Oct. 6.

Senior running back Nathan Hoyte was named Offensive Player of the Week and senior Darvel Nelson was named Offensive Lineman of the Week after leading the Golden Rams to a 36-14 victory over the Dragons. Hoyte rushed for 121 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Rams. He led all ASU rushers to 182 rushing yards. Nelson was a key anchor of the Golden Rams offensive line that helped produce 457 yards of total offense.

Senior quarterback David Kooi and junior defensive back Dexter Moody received honorable metion recogitions for their performance. Kooi passed for 275 yards and completed 19-of-34 passes, including three touchdown passes. He also rushed for 30 yards on eight carries for the Golden Rams. Moody was a key leader on the "Dirty Blue" defense with seven tackles, including four solo stops. He also intercepted two Dragon passes, one of which set up a six-play, 46-yard scoring drive for the Golden Rams.

The SIAC Defensive Player of the Week was Quavon Taylor, the Tuskegee University freshman linebacker who recorded five tackles and two interceptions in their win over Morehouse College. The Newcomer of tlhe Week was freshman quarterback Marcus Graham of Benedict College, who passed for285yards and two touchdowns in their loss to Stillman College. Fort Valley State University senior kicker was named Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking three field goals and averaging 52.6 yards on five punts in their win over Kentucky State University.

Albany State fans can watch Hoyte, Nelson and the Golden Rams in action against the Morehouse Maroon Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at B.T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta.
