Portia Jones

Portia Jones is entering her 10th year as the Co-Head Cheerleading Coach at Albany State University.

With nearly a decade of experience, Jones is dedicated to fostering athleticism, leadership, and spirit in young athletes. After serving as an ASU Cheerleader during college, she transitioned into a coaching position to share her passion for the sport. She expresses gratitude to Dr. Stephanie Dyer and Karla Anderson for allowing her to step into such significant shoes.

Before her time at Albany State, Jones attended Dougherty Comprehensive High School locally and graduated in 2005. During her time at DCHS, she was a four-year letterman in cheerleading and served as team captain in both her junior and senior years. Additionally, she was voted Miss Dougherty High and participated in the concert chorale.

Committed to developing each athlete's confidence, teamwork, and discipline, Jones focuses on creating a positive and supportive environment for her cheerleaders. She believes that cheerleading is not only about stunts and routines but also about building strong character and nurturing a sense of community.

Currently, Jones teaches in the Dougherty County School System.

A native of Albany, GA, Jones attended Albany State University from 2005 to 2009, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree. During her time at the "Unsinkable ASU," she was also a member of the ASU Cheer Team from 2006 to 2007. Committed to furthering her education, she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree. After returning to her hometown, Jones now resides in Albany with her husband, Courtney Jones, and their three children, Zyon, Zoei, and Kamran.

She is a member of the Devastating Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and attends 3rd Kiokee Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Keith Drakes. Striving to enhance her skills, she stays up-to-date with the latest coaching techniques.
