  • Title
    Defensive Line Coach

Markus McElveen has been named the Defensive Line Coach at Albany State University, effective January 26. A veteran football coach and proven leader of young men, McElveen brings more than 15 years of experience at the collegiate and high school levels to the Golden Rams football program.

Prior to joining Albany State, McElveen served as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Winston-Salem State University, where he established himself as one of the top defensive minds in Division II. In his first season as defensive coordinator, the Rams produced one of the nation’s most dominant defensive units, earning national recognition from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). WSSU finished the season ranked No. 10 nationally in total defense, No. 1 in first down defense, and No. 4 in red zone defense across all of Division II. Within the CIAA, the Rams led the conference in total defense, first down defense, and red zone defense, while also ranking second in rushing defense and fifth in passing defense.

Under McElveen’s leadership, Winston-Salem State consistently fielded a disciplined, efficient, and aggressive defense. The Rams ranked among the top ten nationally and finished fourth in overall defensive efficiency within the CIAA during his tenure. His impact extended beyond the numbers, as six student-athletes earned All-Conference honors under his tutelage, including Justin Fleming, Camar Kyle, Avery Hall, CJ Brown, Evan Powell, and Jupe Alston.

Before his time at Winston-Salem State, McElveen served as a defensive coordinator at both Bunnell High School and Norwalk High School in Connecticut. His leadership at the high school level helped develop some of the state’s top defensive talent, including standout defensive linemen James Makszin, CJ Newton, and Jeremy Jimenez, along with top linebacker Marlon Brown. He also brings prior collegiate experience from Shaw University, where he served as the defensive line coach.

A native of Connecticut, McElveen is a graduate of Shaw University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Psychology. As a student-athlete, he was a four-year starter and an accomplished performer, earning Lindsey All-American honors, two All-Conference selections, three Academic All-American recognitions, and contributing to three CIAA championship teams. McElveen is also an active member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

With his extensive defensive background, proven development of elite talent, and commitment to mentorship, McElveen adds immediate experience and championship-level insight to Albany State’s defensive front.
