Albany State University Director of Athletics proudly announces the hiring of Derek Davis as the newest addition to the athletic training staff on October 17, 2025.
Davis brings a strong professional foundation, exceptional clinical preparation, and the perspective of a former championship-winning Golden Ram student-athlete to his new role.
Davis’ clinical training features a wide range of hands-on experiences across high schools, university athletics, orthopedic clinics, urgent care settings, and physical therapy practices. His work includes:
- Crisp County High School (2023–24): 200+ hours supporting multiple sports under Preceptor J.P. Hamilton
- Early County High School (2024): 100+ hours under Preceptor Samantha Peckham
- Albany State University (2024): 100+ hours with ASU baseball, women’s tennis, and softball under Preceptor Charlie Holliday
- Hughston Clinic Physical Therapy (2024): 50+ hours under Preceptor Mollie McGowan, DPT
- OneSource Healthcare (2024): 50+ hours assisting with triage, labs, and urgent care under Preceptor Kaylee White, FNP-C
- Phoebe Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (2024–25):
- 300+ hours (Fall 2024) assisting clinic operations and covering Terrell Academy and Terrell County High School sports under Preceptor Will Sells
- 300+ hours (Spring 2025) providing orthopedic and sports medicine support and servicing Deerfield-Windsor School athletics under Preceptor Jeff Tanner
Davis began his collegiate journey at Georgia Southern University before transferring to Albany State University, where he excelled both on the field and in the classroom. As a member of the Golden Rams Football Program, he played an instrumental role in capturing the 2021 SIAC Championship. His academic dedication earned him placement on the SIAC
Commissioner’s All-Academic Team (2018–19), reflecting his commitment to excellence in all facets of student-athlete life.
In 2021, Davis earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance from ASU. He continued his academic and professional development as a member of the inaugural graduating class of Albany State’s Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program, earning his advanced degree in 2025.
Derek Davis, a native of Leesburg, Georgia, returns home to Albany State University as an Assistant Athletic Trainer, bringing with him a strong combination of clinical experience, academic excellence, and Golden Ram pride. A graduate of Deerfield-Windsor School, Davis was a standout athlete, earning All-State and All-Region honors during his high school career.
Beyond athletic training, he enjoys hunting and fishing, proudly representing his South Georgia roots.
