Rickey Alexander is in his 29th season as an assistant coach with the Albany State University Golden Rams.
With more than 30 years of coaching experience, Alexander is the assistant head coach and currently coaches the Golden Rams linebackers. During the 2000 and 2001 seasons, he served as offensive coordinator under head coach Mike White.
A former Albany State starting quarterback, Alexander coached under the legendary Coach Hampton "Hamp" Smith for 15 seasons. From 1996 through 1999, Alexander served as offensive coordinator, directing Coach Smith's "Option Attack." During that time, the Golden Rams compiled an impressive 34-7 record and a 10-0 undefeated season in 1997. The Golden Rams also won two SIAC championships and made appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1996 and 1997.
Alexander was instrumental in leading the Golden Rams offense to its first NCAA playoff victory, defeating the Southern Arkansas Muleriders 10-7 in 1997. The following weekend, the Rams played in their first quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, losing to Carson Newman College, 22-23, in the final seconds of the game.
He was inducted into the Albany State Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 4 2008.
A 1981 graduate of Albany State, Alexander earned his master's degree in Education in 1997 from his alma mater.
