Chi Alpha

Excellence in Athletics and Academics

Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society is a national organization designed to give recognition to college student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college students who receive a varsity letter in their sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and senior years.  The society also serves to promote good citizenship, moral character, and leadership.

Chi Alpha Sigma's purposes are to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited institutions; to recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners; to encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics; to recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university; and to mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes.

One of seven colleges and universities in Georgia with a Chi Alpha Sigma chapter, Albany State organized the Eta Chapter, the first chapter at a historically black college or university, in 2011. Other institutions in the state are Georgia Southwestern State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Kennesaw State University, Oglethorpe University, Piedmont College, and Savannah State University. Seven student-athletes were inducted as charter members into the ASU chapter on April 24, 2012.

Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in May 1996 by DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. The organization currently has 222 chapters in 40 states. The motto of the society is Excellence in Athletics and Academics with a focus on athletics, academics, achievement and attitude.
