ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany State University volleyball team split its two matches on the final day of the SIAC Crossover on Saturday inside Jones Brothers HPER Gym, sweeping Central State before falling to Spring Hill in three competitive sets.
Game 1: Albany State 3, Central State 0
Albany State opened the day with a strong all-around performance, defeating Central State in straight sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-20. The Golden Rams totaled 41 kills and hit .230 as a team while limiting Central State to a .057 hitting percentage.
The Golden Rams set the tone early with their best offensive set of the match, putting down 16 kills on 29 attempts with only five errors to hit .379 in the opening frame. Albany State followed with 11 kills in the second set before recording 14 more in the third to finish off the sweep.
Aleiah Carr led a balanced Albany State attack with nine kills while hitting .389. Jarianis Perez and Amiria Anderson each added eight kills, while Maya Ogbogu recorded seven kills and hit .500. Shaniya Banks was efficient in the middle, finishing with six kills without an error on 11 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage.
Trinity Britt led the Golden Rams with 18 assists, while Liannette Burgos added 10. Perez contributed 11 digs, while Burgos collected eight. Albany State also finished the match with seven service aces.
Game 2: Spring Hill 3, Albany State 0
The Golden Rams returned to the court later Saturday to face Spring Hill in a match that was tightly contested from beginning to end. Spring Hill came away with the 3-0 victory, but Albany State pushed the Badgers in all three sets, falling 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23.
The back-and-forth match featured 21 ties and 12 lead changes. The third set was particularly competitive, featuring eight ties and six lead changes as the Golden Rams battled for an opportunity to extend the match.
Albany State recorded 13 kills in the opening set before adding nine in the second. The Golden Rams responded with 13 kills and a .167 hitting percentage in the third, but Spring Hill countered with 16 kills and a .214 hitting percentage to close out the match.
Carr led Albany State with eight kills, while Perez and Anderson each recorded seven. Banks finished with five kills on eight attempts and hit .375, while Serenity Jackson added three kills without an error to also hit .375.
Burgos and Britt shared the setting duties with 15 assists apiece. Myra Lopez anchored the defense with a team-high 14 digs and two service aces, while Perez added 12 digs and Anderson finished with eight.
Albany State finished the day with a 9-8 overall record and a 3-1 mark in SIAC play.
The Golden Rams will return to action Thursday for their official home opener against Allen University inside Jones Brothers HPER Gym.
