Albany State Falls to Columbus State in Doubleheader

Columbus, GA – The Albany State University Lady Golden Rams faced a tough challenge, falling to Columbus State in both games of their doubleheader at Cougar Field. With the losses, Albany State drops to 2-4 overall, while Columbus State improves to 7-1 on the season.

Game 1 Recap: Columbus State 9, Albany State 1 (5 Innings)

Columbus State struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding another four in the second to build an 8-0 lead. Albany State's only run came in the third inning when Madison Hurt scored on a throwing error by the Columbus State third baseman. The Lady Golden Rams struggled to generate offense, managing just two hits in the game—one from Hurt and another from Ty'Janae Brown. Pitcher Romona McLeod (1-1) took the loss for Albany State, allowing eight runs on five hits in 1.2 innings, while Mary Hulsey came in for relief, giving up just one run on three hits over 2.1 innings. Columbus State's Gracyn Gurley led the way with three RBIs, while pitcher Julianna Franklin (5-0) earned the win, striking out five over four innings.

Game 2 Recap: Columbus State 8, Albany State 0 (5 Innings)

The second game saw another dominant performance from the Lady Cougars, as they broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with two runs, followed by a six-run explosion in the fourth to seal the victory. Albany State was held to just three hits, with Madison Hurt leading the way again with two singles. Columbus State took advantage of six walks and two errors to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Pitcher Kaliyah Smith Barnes (1-3) went the distance for ASU, allowing seven earned runs on three hits, while striking out four in four innings. Columbus State's Lily Miller (2-1) dominated on the mound, tossing four shutout innings with seven strikeouts to secure the win.

The Lady Golden Rams will look to regroup as they travel to Spartanburg, SC, for the HBCU Softball Classic from February 14-16. The tournament marks the first of the season for Albany State, where they will face off against a mix of SIAC and CIAA opponents.
