Ga. Southwestern Gets Past ASU Softball

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Lady Rams saw a few big innings go against them on Tuesday. Albany State led for a half inning and had a tough day on the softball diamond as Georgia Southwestern held home field in both contests, 9-3 and 13-7.

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, ASU (27-13) received hits and then stolen bases from Madison Hurt and Keyatta Ayers. Romona McLeod followed with a RBI single, Trista Murphy pushed another runner home on a fielding error and Morgan Baker made it 3-3 with a RBI single. Georgia Southwestern didn't let the deadlock last long with an unearned run in the home fourth and then five insurance runs in the sixth for the win.

Down 5-3 going to the fifth in the late contest, the Lady Rams edged ahead for the first time on the day. Emaria Banks and Baker singled and both trotted around the rest of the bases when Olivia Mason blasted a 3-run homer for a 6-5 lead. The Hurricanes came back with a big 8-run home fifth and went on for the victory.

The ASU trio of Hurt, Ayers and Mason all accounted for three of the team's 18 hits apiece. Hurt scored once, drove in two and swiped a base, while Ayers scored two and stole one base. Mason had the biggest hit of the day with the 3-run homer.

Jasmine Russell lined a pair of singles in the second affair and Baker had one in each contest. The other visitors' hits came from McLeod, Brielle Thompson, De'Laynie Hollis, Banks and Kaliyah Smith.

Game 2

Behind 3-0, Hurt singled to bring home Smith, who had singled, stole second and was sacrificed to third, for the Lady Rams first run.

McLeod lofted a sac fly and Hurt another run-scoring hit in the top of the fourth to cut the ASU deficit to 5-3.

ASU will now be off before it travels to the northeast in a key SIAC East 3-game series starting Saturday afternoon, April 20, in a doubleheader at Fort Valley State. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
