Softball Falls to Southern Wesleyan In Doubleheader Action

Albany, Ga. (March 1, 2019)– Albany State University surrendered a 2-1 and 11-5 final decision to Southern Wesleyan University Friday afternoon.

Albany State had four hits in game one. Keychelle Evans, Jala Stewart, Lavette Tucker all posted hits for the Golden Rams. Mikiyah Harris recorded one RBI. Aryn McGowan pitched four innings. 

The Golden Rams posted nine hits in the second game. Mikiyah Harris, Jordynne Barabello and Lavette Tucker each posted two hits to lead the team, while three other Rams contributed one hit apiece. The Golden rams had four RBIs. Barabello had two RBIs. Albany State posted six strikeouts in game two, four coming from Aryn McGowan and two coming from starting pitcher, Lauren Lowery

How It Happened
Game One
The Warriors struck early in game one. Delaney Byers kicked off the first inning with a double. Ashton Martin then drew a walk to take first base. Kali Berrigan doubled to score Byers and advance Martin to third. The Warriors led 1-0. Albany State answered in the bottom of the second to pick up one run to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Southern Wesleyan homered in the top of the third to lead-off the inning and increased the Warriors lead to 2-1. Strong pitching by SWU was able to hold the Golden Rams and allow the Warriors to win game one 2-1. 
 
Game Two 
Southern Wesleyan came out firing in game two, with a double from the Warriors to lead-off the first inning. SWU's Collins stole third and Byerssingled to score her and gain an RBI. Lydia Clanton then singled to advance Byers to second base. Ashton Martin grounded out to third base, but was able to advance both runners. Byers was picked off on the run to third, but Kali Berrigan reached first on a third strike drop ball to score Clanton. Megan New kept the bats hot with a double to score Berrigan and the Warriors led 3-0 in the first inning. 
 
The Golden Rams responded with three runs of their own to tie the game 3-3 going into the top of the third inning.  After a long rain delay, the Warriors came out strong in the top of the third inning. Byers led-off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single from Clanton. Martin also walked and advanced both runners. Grace McGuffin came in to run for Martin. Berrigan then doubled to score Byers and Clanton and move McGuffin to third. New grounded out to the shortstop, but Berrigan advanced to third on the throw and McGuffin scored. Amber Belk then came in and doubled to score Berrigan and gave the Warriors the 7-3 lead. Albany State tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to trail 7-4. 

SWU led-off the top of the seventh inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a single from New. From that point Southern Wesleyan controlled the game. The Warriors then plated four points in the remaining innings to cruise to a 11-5 victory. 
 
What's Next
Albany State will travel to Americus, Georgia to face Georgia Southwestern State University on March 2 at 3 and 5 p.m.
