Women’s Basketball Secures Close 70-69 Victory over Kentucky State University

ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany State University women's basketball team secured a very close 70-69 victory over Kentucky State University in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the ASU West Campus Arena.

Trailing by five with four minutes remaining, KSU tightened up its defense, and following a three-pointer the Thorobreds claimed the 66-65 lead with 2:04 left. However, Albany State split a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to reclaim the lead.

A steal and conversion pushed the Golden Rams lead to three points. Kentucky State missed a potential game-tying corner three with 10 seconds remaining, and another ASU free throw sealed the game. A late three-pointer by Brown accounted for the final score.

Alexis Smith and Ciera Norman finished the game with 18 points each respectively.  Smith added three rebounds, one assist and one block. Senior Alexandria James finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Tyra Thompson added eight points.

Passion Thomas pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with seven points.

Four of the five starters scored as Kentucky State raced out to a 12-2 lead, but the Golden Rams responded by ending the quarter by scoring 14 of the last 16 points. Back-to-back three-pointers to start the second quarter helped KSU regain the lead it held for most of the first quarter.

The lead grew to as much as eight before, just like the first quarter, ASU closed ferociously with a 10-2 run for a 32-all tie.

Kentucky State trailed by much of the third quarter with the deficit growing to as much as seven, but despite a late rally wasn't enough as the Golden Rams secured a very close 70-69 victory.

Albany State (2-9 overall, 1-3 SIAC) will close out 2019 play as they host Central State University on Saturday, December 21 at 11 a.m.
