SOFTBALL FINISHES PERFECT SIAC SLATE WITH SWEEP OF FORT VALLEY

ASU Posts Best Conference Record Since 2010 Season

FORT VALLEY- The Albany State University softball team made a little bit of history on Saturday afternoon.

With their series sweep of Fort Valley State, the Golden Rams finish the regular season with a perfect 19-0 record in SIAC play. According to available records this represents their best conference record since posting an 18-1 mark during the 2010 campaign and ASU's only perfect conference season with the consideration that two SIAC games (Spring Hill, Miles College) were rained out at this year's softball crossover.

As for the three game series with the Wildcats, the Golden Rams earned a 5-0 shutout in the opener and then took Saturday's doubleheader 11-6 and 9-0.

On Friday, Aryn McGowan was the winner pitcher as ASU blanked the Wildcats 5-0. For McGowan it was her second shutout within the last week (Paine College April 13th) and third overall of the season. The Hazelhurst, Ga native went the distance, striking out eight while surrendering only three hits on the afternoon. She also drove in two runs with a double in the Rams' half of the fifth inning to put ASU up 3-0.

Jordan Baranello scored the Rams' first run in the top of the third and ASU closed out the win courtesy of a 2RBI double from Dameshia Russell in the seventh inning.

The ASU's game two triumph, the Golden Rams trailed early when the Wildcats put up their first runs of the series with two in their first at bat. Albany State charged back in the following inning, reeling off six runs off five hits and two Wildcat errors. Lavette Tucker capped the inning with a bases clearing triple to give ASU a four point lead.

The Wildcats plated four runs in the bottom of the third but went without a score the rest of the way. The Rams pulled ahead on a bases loaded RBI single from Mikiyah Harris and ASU added three in the fifth and a run in the sixth for the final point spread.

In the finale Albany State scored in all but one at bat to take a 9-0 victory in five innings. Jade Williams led the way for the Golden Rams going 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Baranello and Tucker each put up 2RBI and Taylor Clemens improved to 4-1 as a starter and collected her first shutout of the season.

The Golden Rams (25-20) will hit the road on Tuesday, April 24th for a non-conference doubleheader at Valdosta State. Game time is scheduled for 3pm.
