ASU SPLITS ONE RUN GAMES IN SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

Golden Rams’ Rally Comes Up Short in Game Two

ALBANY- Columbus State and Albany State both came away with one run victories in Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader at West Campus Field.

The Golden Rams took the series opener 3-2 while the Cougars held on for a 10-9 victory in the nightcap.

ASU did all of their scoring in their first turn at the plate in game one. Calli Star put the Cougars up 1-0 when her RBI single plated Kia Smith from second base. The Golden Rams responded in the bottom of the inning with Lavette Tucker's 3RBI home run, giving ASU a two run advantage that would hold until the top of the seventh inning.

The home run was Tucker's ninth of 2018, which ranks first on the team this season. Starting pitcher Aryn McGowan yielded only one run to the Cougars the rest of the way. That hit came in the top of the seventh when Cali Star hit a two out homer to pull the Cougars within a run.

Kristin Studds flew out to left field and ASU held on for the 3-2 triumph. McGowan went the distance for the Golden Rams, allowing only six hits while striking out six to even her record at 9-9 on the season.

In the nightcap with one swing, McGowan shifted the momentum to ASU's side with a pinch hit, grand slam in the bottom of the sixth but the 10-8 score still favored the Cougars.

After holding Columbus State in the top of the seventh, the Golden Rams inched within a run when Jordan Baranello's two out single drove in Mikiyah Harris.

A ground out to second base sealed the win for Columbus State.

The Cougars charged out to an early lead, scoring four runs by the close of the first before adding five more runs in the third for a commanding 9-0 advantage. ASU got on the scoreboard when an error in left field advanced Demeshia Russell home.

The Golden Rams scored three more off two doubles in the bottom of the third, the latter coming on a 2RBI pinch hit double from Brianna Murillo.

Columbus State (26-15) was spotted another run by ASU on an error in the top of the fifth.

The Golden Rams (18-19) will hit the field again on Friday for the first game of three-series stand with Paine College. Game time is scheduled for 3pm at West Campus Field.
