THOROBREDS CHARGE PAST LADY RAMS IN OVERTIME

Lady Rams' Season Ends in Quarterfinal of SIAC Tournament

March 1, 2018

BIRMINGHAM, AL- Kentucky State University overcame a 16 point deficit to upset the Albany State Golden Rams 71-65 in overtime Thursday night at Bill Harris Arena.

The Thorobreds got a game high 22 points from Brittani Rizzi and a 14 point 16 rebound performance from Brooke Wallace to earn a berth in the semifinals of the SIAC Tournament against Central State on Friday.

Wallace's biggest rebound of the day, an offensive board, led to the layup that tied the game at 61 at the end of regulation. ASU's last second heave at their basket fell short and the game went on to the extra session.

In overtime the Golden Rams were outscored 10-4. Albany State was 0 for their first 6 attempts and did not hit a shot from the floor until there was 14 seconds left and the game was all but decided.

The Golden Rams held a 28-16 lead at the intermission and took their biggest lead of the game after Ashley Johnson drained a three pointer to make the score 37-21 with 7:02 left in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Thorobreds used timely three point shooting to crawl back into the contest. KSU went 3-4 from beyond the three point arc, the last coming from Rizzi with 1:29 remaining to make the score 59-58 in favor of  the Golden Rams. Two possessions later, Alexandria James hit a layup to put ASU up three 61-58 with 38 seconds left.

After a miss, an offensive board and timeout by Kentucky State, Rizzi was fouled on a three point attempt, sending her to the line with 10 ticks left.  She sank the first but misfired on the second attempt setting up Wallace's game tying heroics. The Thorobreds scored the first 8 points of overtime, giving them their first lead since Rizzi opened the game with a three pointer.

Elesha Foster paced the Golden Rams with 16 points while Kayla Green and Alexandria James both chipped in with 15 points.

Albany State wraps the season with a 17-12 record.
