LADY RAMS SURGE PAST CLARK-ATLANTA 71-55

Albany State Hands CAU First Division Loss of Season

January 13, 2018

ALBANY- The Albany State Lady Golden Rams defended their home court with a 71-55 triumph over Clark-Atlanta University Saturday afternoon at Wets Campus Arena.

With the win the Lady Golden Rams raise their record to 10-9 overall (SIAC 6-3) and deliver the Panthers their first divisional loss of the season. Clark-Atlanta was held to just 23% shooting (16-69), a season low for all opponents ASU has faced this year.

The Lady Panthers also squandered their opportunities to keep pace with ASU from the free throw line, going a dismal 18-39 from the charity stripe.
Naomi Holloway finished with a game high 18 points as Clark-Atlanta slips to 9-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play.

In the first half, the game was tied seven times and the two teams went back and forth as the lead changed hands on nine different occasions. The Panthers held a three point advantage with under a minute to go 29-26. The Golden Rams then turned the tables with a quick spurt over the waning seconds. After layup by Gemiya Bowman with 34 seconds left and a CAU turnover, Elesha Foster's offensive board and put-back gave Albany State a 30-29 lead at the intermission.

Tyra Thompson nailed a three-pointer that sparked a 6-0 run to open the second half and give ASU its first double digit lead of the game, 39-29 at the 7:26 mark. The Lady Golden Rams doubled the Panthers in points (18-9) in the third quarter and held CAU to just 9% shooting from the field (1-11).

Achanti Layfield and Kayla Green paced ASU with 15 and 14 points respectively. Both did the bulk of their scoring in the second half; Layfield netted 12 points after the intermission while Green put up a 10 point effort.

The Lady Golden Rams will return to action on Saturday, January 20th against Fort Valley State University in the first game of an SIAC doubleheader. Game one of the Battle of the Blue and Gold will tip off at West Campus Arena at 4pm.
