Lady Rams demolish CAU to open three-game series

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team won the first battle for SIAC East Division supremacy. Using two big scoring innings, ASU defeated Clark Atlanta 11-1 to open the three-game series.
 
With the win, the first place Lady Rams improve to 13-14 overall and 9-2 in the SIAC. CAU, who is currently second in the division, falls to 11-17, 7-3.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Albany State began its dominance with its run in the second inning. Jala Stewart singled to centerfield to score Malea Maye and gave ASU a 1-0 edge.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Rams began to pull away from the visitors. Stewart hit another single to centerfield that allowed Kayla Alexander and Danielle Turner to score for a 3-0 lead. Brianna  Murillo  singled to the same area, and Maye went home to put ASU ahead 4-0. Kyera Whitaker's single allowed Murillo to score, and Albany State led 5-0.
 
Clark Atlanta scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning, but Albany State answered in the bottom of the stanza. Maye doubled to score Danielle Turner to ignite another five-run inning by the home team. The contest ended in the fifth inning courtesy of the eight-run rule.
 
Stewart led Albany State by going 2-for-2 and recording four RBIs. Whitaker was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Maye and Murillo each went 2-for-3 from the plate.
 
Tiffany Massey was the winning pitcher for the Lady Rams. She only gave up four hits and had three strikeouts. ASU collected 11 hits, committed no errors and left five runners on base.
 
The Lady Panthers were led by Tatianna Kelly, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Ajada Cofield was the losing pitcher.
 
The two teams will return to action on Saturday, March 24 with a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m.
