Lady Rams lose overtime thriller to Benedict in SIAC tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ga.- The fifth-seeded Albany State women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, but it didn't happen without a major fight on its part. Facing #1E Benedict and giving it all it could handle, the Lady Rams' valiant fight ended with a 66-61 overtime loss in the 2017 SIAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
                        
ASU ends its season with an 8-20 overall record. Benedict improves to 19-7 and moves on to face the winner of the #2W Miles-#3E Fort Valley State matchup, which will be played on Thursday.
 
For the second straight game, Albany State had to battle from a first half deficit. After the first quarter, ASU trailed the Lady Tigers 20-15. Benedict held a 32-21 lead at the 2:48 mark of the second quarter and built a 35-26 halftime advantage.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Rams made a furious comeback. ASU outscored BC 18-9 in the stanza to tie the score at 44 when Elesha Foster connected on a pair of free throws.
 
Both teams manage to swap the lead and generate ties in the fourth quarter. Trailing 54-53, Foster completed a three-point play with 35 seconds left to put Albany State ahead 56-54. However, Shirvel Luke made two free throws to tie the score for Benedict at 56. The Lady Rams got off a final shot, but it didn't connect.
 
In the extra session, ASU had difficulty scoring to keep pace with the top seed. Ashley Johnson made a layup with 10 seconds left to cut the team's deficit to 64-61, but that's as close as it could get.
 
Kayla Green led Albany State with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Johnson and Foster each recorded double-doubles. The former had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and the latter tallied 12 points and 14 rebounds. In her final game as a Lady Ram, Zuri Frost scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams shot 18-of-82 (22%) from the field, 2-of-18 (11.1%) from three-point range and 23-of-33 (69.7%) from the free throw line.
 
Benedict was led by LeAnna Morrison, who had 15 points and seven rebounds. Zairra Harris added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers shot 18-of-67 (26.9%) from the field, 7-of-26 (26.9%) from three-point range and 23-of-40 (57.5%) from the free throw line.
