Late shot by archrival FVSU sinks Lady Rams

ALBANY, Ga.- Fort Valley State's Daknequa White nailed a long three-pointer with 3.8 seconds to beat the shot clock and send the Albany State women's basketball team to a 49-48 defeat. The loss ends the Lady Rams three-game winning streak. ASU is now 5-19 overall and 4-10 in the SIAC.

In front of a raucous crowd, the two teams battled early in the low-scoring duel. After the first quarter, the score was tied at 12. Albany State was only able to create a little breathing room in the second quarter. Kayla Green's basket with 15 seconds left gave the Lady Rams a 27-22 at halftime.
 
The game remained close in the third stanza. Tyra Thompson made a layup to give the Lady Rams a 42-36 lead with 1:06 left. However, Briunca Caldwell scored for Fort Valley State to cut the visitors' deficit to 42-38 by the end of the quarter.
 
The fourth quarter produced the major dramatics for the homecoming contest. With 5:11 left in regulation, Elesha Foster gave ASU a 45-42 advantage. The Lady Wildcats used baskets by Caldwell and Shekiya Tarpkins to take a 46-45 lead with 2:48 left to play.
 
Foster reclaimed the lead for Albany State 38 seconds later. Her shot put the Lady Rams ahead 47-46 at the 2:10 mark. Tyra Thompson added a free throw 53 seconds left to give ASU a 48-46 lead. The home team had a chance to increase its edge after a FVSU turnover, but it also had a miscue to give the ball back to the Lady Wildcats.
 
With the shot clock running down, White made a 25-foot three-pointer to give Fort Valley State a 49-48 lead with 3.8 seconds left. Albany State had a final chance to win, but Zuri Frost's turnover in the final seconds sealed the Lady Rams defeat.
 
Foster led Albany State with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Green added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
The Lady Rams shot 17-of-56 (30.4%) from the field, 4-of-20 (20%) from three-point range and 10-of-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line. The team also had 21 turnovers.
 
Tarpkins recorded a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds for FVSU. White added another 15 points.
 
The Lady Wildcats shot 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the field, 5-of-16 (31.3%) from three-point range and 8-of-16 (50%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22 when it travels to Orangeburg, S.C. to face Claflin University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
