Albany State Rallies to Defeat Claflin in Five Sets

ALBANY- The Albany State University Lady Golden Rams outlasted an upstart Claflin University squad in five sets on Senior Night Friday at HPER Gymnasium (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 10-25, 15-13)

With the win the Lady Golden Rams remain undefeated in the East (9-0) and atop the Division at 15-8, 13-3.

Although there is one home game remaining (November 7th, a Tuesday vs Georgia College) the ASU seniors Chelona Holmes, Jahkishma Soto, Justice Howard, Jordan Stuckey and Brittiani Phillips, chose the Friday matchup with Claflin so their families could all be in attendance.

As for the evening contest, the Lady Panthers play was not a reflection of just 6 wins on the season. Claflin took advantage of several unforced ASU errors to steal the first set 25-23.
Albany State took the next two sets 25-22 and 25-19 but Claflin fought back with a resounding performance in the fourth set. The Lady Panthers put up 12 kills vs only one hitting error for a convincing 25-10 set win.

The final set was a slugfest as the teams traded points throughout the fifth. The Lady Golden Rams squeezed out the match 15-13 as Claflin's offense struggled with 7 critical errors in point shortened set.

Defensively, both teams put up a valiant effort at the net; Claflin (6-17, SIAC 6-9) finished with 12 assisted blocks while ASU posted 8 assisted a 5 solo.

Jahkishma Soto anchored the ASU offense with 41 assists and 5 all-important service aces. Howard led all performers with 14 kills, followed by Holmes' 13 kills. Phillips put up a 5 kill, 2 solo, 2 assisted block effort.

ASU will hit the road on November 6th as they travel to Atlanta, GA to face off against Clark-Atlanta University. Game time is scheduled for 6pm.
