Golden Rams fall to Valdosta State in season opener

Valdosta, Ga.- Quarterback Caleb Edmonds rushed for 156 yards, completed 15 of 30 passes for 157 yard and scored a touchdown in his team's season opener. However, Albany State could not end its long losing streak against its state rival.
 
After taking an early lead, the Golden Rams offense struggled in the second half, and ASU eventually lost 16-7 to the Valdosta State Blazers.
 
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first period tie, Albany State opened the scoring at the 8:45 mark of the second stanza. After a long run by running back Dalviness Green, Edmonds recorded the only points of the half with a with a 5-yard touchdown. Emilio Maldonado completed the PAT for a 7-0 lead. The drive went 10 plays for 72 yards in 3:37.
 
In the third period, Valdosta State ended its scoring drought when Andrew Gray connected on a 43-yard field goal to cut his team's deficit to 7-3 with 9:22 left. The Blazers scored more points six minutes later. Quarterback Roland Rivers connected with Dallas Baldner for a 5-yard touchdown to give the Blazers a 10-7 lead.
 
At the end of the third, Rivers provided VSU with a 16-7 advantage with a 9-yard scamper. The Golden Rams blocked the PAT. ASU had promising drives in the remaining time, but late turnovers plagued their comeback attempt.
 
Wide receiver Ta'Keevian Harris had eight receptions for 74 yards for Albany State. Sophomore Michael Green tallied four receptions for 39 yards.
 
As a team, the Golden Rams gained 220 yards rushing and 157 yards passing yards. They outgained VSU in both rushing (67) and passing (137) but threw four interceptions.
Defensively, Nick Scott led the way with four tackles and two pass breakups. Monte Taylor and Zavondric Shingleton added four tackles apiece. Defensive lineman Grover Stewart recorded two sacks.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it faces SIAC rival Tuskegee University in the 3rd Annual White Water Classic in Phenix City, Ala. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
