Lady Rams drop thriller to Claflin; lose SIAC East title

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team engaged in an eight-inning battle with SIAC East division rival Claflin on Thursday afternoon. However, ASU was unable to emerge victorious, narrowly losing to the Lady Panthers 7-6.
 
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 17-33 overall and 13-5 in the SIAC. More importantly, the setback awards Claflin the east division crown and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming conference tournament. Claflin improves to 31-20, 18-4.
 
Claflin took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Lady Rams cut their deficit in half when Zorria Mann scored off a passed ball.
 
The Lady Panthers increased their lead to 3-1 in the top of third inning, but ASU rallied. Toni Coleman scored off a single by Ambrionna Atkism to make the score 3-2. Then, Kayla Alexander went home courtesy of a passed ball to tie the game at three.
 
Atkism become the recipient of Mann's single to give her team its first lead of the game at 4-3. Another run by Mann gave the home team a 5-3 advantage.
 
In the fourth and fifth innings, Claflin scored a run in each to tie the score at five. In the pulsating eighth inning, CU regained the lead by scoring two runs to build a 7-5 edge.
 
In the bottom of the stanza, Albany State scored a run when Brishanti Weaver went home for a 7-6 deficit. However, the Lady Rams could not capitalize on a runner in scoring position, and the game ended on a pop-up to third base.
 
Mann led Albany State with two hits, and the team collected eight as a team. They also had six errors. Tiffany Massey (6-17) was the losing pitcher.
 
Albany State will travel to Augusta April 22-23 for its final regular season games. The Lady Rams will take on Paine College in a three-game series. The two teams will play a single game on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
