Golden Rams take SIAC East lead with win over Clark Atlanta

ALBANY, Ga- Senior quarterback Caleb Edmonds was 16-for-36 for 232 yards and passed and rushed for the team's only two touchdowns to lead Albany State to a 17-7 win over SIAC East Division leader Clark Atlanta University. With the victory, the Golden Rams (4-3, 3-1 in the SIAC) are now the division leaders, while Clark Atlanta (5-2, 3-3) falls to third after Benedict College defeated Morehouse College on Saturday to take second place.
 
The game against Clark Atlanta was ASU's annual homecoming celebration. The team also honored its 12 senior players with Senior Day activities in front of a capacity crowd of over 10,000.
 
Albany State scored its only points of the first half when kicker Emilio Maldonado made a 35-yard field goal at the 4:43 mark of the first quarter. The drive used six plays and 50 yards in 2:13.
 
Clark Atlanta took the lead with 1:30 left in the second quarter. Quarterback Dashawn Blow rushed 10 yards to the end zone to give the Panthers a 7-3 advantage they would take into halftime.
 
ASU wasted no time in regaining the lead in the third quarter. With 11:56 remaining in the period, Edmonds connected with McKinley Habersham for a 27-yard touchdown. Maldonado's successful PAT capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive that used 2:57, and the Golden Rams led 10-7.
 
Albany State ended CAU's hope of a comeback at the 4:34 mark of the fourth quarter. Edmonds sprinted two yards to the end zone for a touchdown, and Maldonado added the PAT to give the Golden Rams a 17-7 edge.
 
Albany State wide receiver Quadrey Simmons recorded four receptions for 87 yards. McKinley Habersham rushed nine times for 67 yards, and Jarvis Small had 15 rushes for 51 yards. Albany State gained a total of 366 yards for the game.
 
Defensively, safety Nick Scott led ASU with seven solo tackles. Senior Grover Stewart recorded six and a half tackles (six solos) and two sacks. Zavondric Shingleton added six solo tackles and an interception. The "Dirty Blue" Defense held CAU to 263 total yards, including only 65 yards rushing.
 
Seniors Small, Edmonds, Stewart, Marquiz Hodo, Mack Green, Ryan Selby, Brandon Smith, Javoris Wilburn, Gregory Farms, Sanford Seay, Nhigel Phillips and Monte Taylor played their final home game for Albany State.
 
Clark Atlanta was led offensively by the quarterback duo of Blow and Johnathan McCrary. The former finished 11-for-18 for 120 yards, and the latter was 17-for-28 for 115 yards.
 
Jacob Mitchell led the Panther defense with six and a half tackles (five solos) and a sack. Jaquatin Mitchell added six tackles (five solos).
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they travel to August, Ga. to face Benedict College in the 2016 Augusta City Classic. The ASU-BC contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Lucy C. Laney Field.
