Lady Rams negate late rally from Lane for key road win

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn.- Artisha Holston scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and Keidra Green added 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 52-47 victory over the Lane College Lady Dragons. With the win, ASU improves to 4-9 overall and 4-1 in the SIAC.

Lane falls to 0-13, 0-5.

Albany State seemed to be on its way to smooth evening as evidence of their play in the first quarter. The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 8-0 lead en route to an 18-8 edge after the period ended. ASU only scored 10 points in the second stanza, but still owned a 28-19 advantage at halftime.

However, in the third quarter, the Lady Dragons outscored Albany State 16-9 to trim the visiting team's lead to 37-35.

In the fourth period, the Lady Rams were able to restore its early double digit lead. A pair of free throws by Ieshia Young and a jumper by Holston pushed ASU ahead 50-37 at the 3:29 mark.

Lane would answer the Albany State run. During an 8-0 spurt of its own, Holston fouled out and the Lady Dragons were able to cut the deficit to 50-45 with 46 seconds left to play in regulation. However, that's as close as LC would get. Elesha Foster nailed two clutch free throws with 41 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Albany State shot 17-of-51 (33.3%) from the field, 2-of-13 (15.4%) from three-point range and 16-of-24 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
The ASU defense also forced the home team into 23 turnovers while recording a season-high 13 steals.

Tashara Jones led Lane with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Niya Royal added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Albany State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 9 when it travels to Mobile, Ala. to face the Spring College Lady Badgers. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. (central time).
