Golden Rams end long losing skid with OT win over Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Khaliq Hughes scored a career-high 22 points, including 14-of-18 from the free throw line, and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to a 97-90 overtime victory over the Paine College Lions. The win snaps ASU' 13-game winning streak and improves the team's record to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the SIAC.

Paine, who entered the game with only six players available to play, falls to 4-13, 1-7.

In a contest that became wild in the latter stages, the two teams exchanged the lead frequently in the first half. Albany State built a 22-17 lead after Michael Green scored a layup at the 8:29 mark. However, Paine answered with a 10-0 run to take a 27-22 edge with 5:29 left in the half. The Lions held a 34-29 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, a three-pointer by Paine's Raheim Connelly put the Golden Rams into a 52-42 deficit. The Golden Rams continued to trail until the 5:43 mark. That's when Malik Dungee nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 65.

With 3:34 remaining in regulation, Earl Farnum's tip-in provided ASU with a 69-68 lead. The Lions answered with two free throws to regain the lead 18 seconds later. However, a dunk by Farnum put Albany State back in front 71-70 with 2:57 left to play.

With the score tied at 77 with 44 second remaining, Timothy Rose found Khaliq Hughes for a layup to give the Golden Rams a two-point lead. Paine's Christian Nobles tied the game with two free throws with 20 seconds left. Albany State could not get a shot off in the remaining time, and the two teams headed into overtime.

In the extra session, Paine, who had already lost one player to fouls, still led 83-81 with 1:32 left in game. At that moment, the contest turned into chaos.

With his team still leading, the Lions' Arnis Libazs fouled Devontay Ward and recorded his fifth foul. Following the call, Libazs and Patrick Petty each picked up technicals, which awarded Khaliq Hughes four free throws. It also gave Albany State the advantage in man power, as Paine was forced to play 5-on-4.

Hughes made all four gratis tosses, and ASU held an 85-83 edge with 1:06 left. Ward added two more makes, and the Golden Rams led 87-83. With 49 seconds left in the game, Petty was whistled for another technical foul and ejected. With Albany State now playing 5-on-3, Hughes made two more free throws to give his team an 88-83 advantage it would not relinquish.

Dungee finished the game with 21 points, including five three-pointers, and eight rebounds. Farnum added 16 points and five rebounds. Rose led the team with six assists.

The Golden Rams shot 31-of-74 (41.9%), 7-of-20 (35%) from three-point range and 28-of37 (75.7%) from the free throw line.

Kaderious Compton led the Lions with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 when it travels Chicago, Ill. to face the Clark Atlanta Panthers in the King Hardwood Classic. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be played at Governor's State University.
