Golden Rams ousted by No. 5 Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss.- Sophomore safety Nick Scott recorded a career-high 12.5 tackles, but Albany State could not overcome a fast start by Delta State or a sluggish day on the offensive side of the ball. The Golden Rams were defeated 40-0 by the Statesmen, the fifth-ranked team in the nation. With the win, ASU now owns a 1-3 overall record. DSU, a member of the Gulf South Conference, improves to 4-0.

Delta State opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. Tyler Sullivan scored a 2-yard touchdown to lead the Statesmen to an early 6-0 lead. Delta State went for a two-point conversion, but it was stopped by the ASU defense.

After a couple of empty possessions, the Golden Rams started striking the latter part of the first quarter. Highlighted by two pass completions by
Yancey Burns, ASU found itself on the home team's one-yard line at the end of the stanza. However, Albany State would fumble on the next play, and Delta State recovered to end the drive.

Four minutes later, DSU increased its lead to 13-0 when James Johnson caught a 3-yard pass. At the 10:31 mark, ASU quarterback
Caleb Edmonds threw an interception, and Delta State's Greg Sims returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, and a 20-0 Statesmen advantage. Another touchdown by DSU with 7:20 left before halftime put the Golden Rams in a 27-0 deficit by intermission.

Delta State added to its lead in the third quarter. Vince Sciorretta hit a 36-yard field goal at the 8:26 mark, and Eddie McCadney added a 4-yard touchdown to put the Golden Rams behind 37-0 heading into the final period. The Statesmen added a 45-yard field goal with 4:05 left in the game to account for the final score.

Edmonds finished 25-of-48 for 213 yards and rushed for 50 more yards. Wide receiver Quadrey Simmons caught five of those passes for 55 yards. Running back Jarvis Small gained 65 yards on 14 carries with limited action in the second half.

Linebacker
Zavondric Shingleton joined Scott with double digit tackles, recording 10.5.  Kelderion Miller had two interceptions, and Quincy Fortson added an interception and two pass breakups before getting injured in the second quarter. The Golden Rams, who entered the game ranked ninth in the nation in Passing Yards Allowed (134.0), gave us 340 yards to the Statesmen.

Albany State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3rd when it travels to Fairfield, Ala. to face the Miles College Golden Bears in an SIAC contest. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
