Lady Rams remain winless after competing in Florida Tech Invitational

MELBOURNE, Fla.- The Albany State women's volleyball team was unable to find the win column over the weekend. ASU went 0-4 after during in the 2015 Florida Tech Lady Panther Invitational. Playing against solid competition for most of the tournament, the Lady Rams lost to Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and tournament host Florida Tech on opening day before falling to in-state rival Columbus State and Lynn University on Day 2.
 
Albany State is now 0-6 on the season.
 
Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 3, Albany State 0
 
After playing almost even with the Lady Bulldogs in the opening set (PRM won 25-19), Albany State could not keep up in the next two games. PRM, playing the Lady Rams in its season opener, dominated the second set by a 25-5 score. The sweep was completed when ASU dropped a 25-9 decision in Game 3.
 

Brittianni Phillips led the Lady Rams with three kills, and Jahsishma Soto and Chelona Holmes added two apiece. Setter Tiffany Roesler recorded nine assists. Freshman Ciara Chapman and Chelsae Bryant each had four digs to lead the team defensively. Kaliah Carter added three digs.
 
 
Florida Tech 3, Albany State 0
 
In their second game of the day, ASU produced a better showing against the tournament host. The Lady Rams kept all three games close, but Florida Tech pulled away late in each of them. The Lady Panthers won all three games by the scores of 17-25, 20-25 and 17-25. Florida Tech improved to 3-1 after the match.
 
Holmes collected five kills for Albany State, and Justice Howard and
Kristen Randolph each added four kills. Roesler had 17 assists and six digs. Carter led the team defensively with 15 digs, and Soto added six more.
 
 
Columbus State 3, Albany State 0
 
After dropping Game 1 by a 15-25 score, Albany State gave Columbus State fits over the next two contests. The Lady Rams battled with CSU in both games, but eventually fell by identical scores, 23-25. The Lady Cougars picked up their first win of the season (1-6) against ASU.
 
Randolph and Holmes led the team offensively with six kills each. Soto added five more kills and also contributed defensively with six digs. Roesler had 20 assists and eight digs from her setter's position. Carter recorded 13 digs.
 
 
Lynn 3, Albany State 0
 
In their final game of the tournament, the Lady Rams dropped that three-game set by the scores of 17-25, 12-25 and 13-25. Lynn improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.
 
Soto led the Lady Rams with six kills, and Randolph had six. Roesler added 13 assists, and Carter recorded nine digs.
 
Albany State will return to action Saturday, Sept. 19 when it battles Benedict College in the SIAC opener for both teams. The first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at ASU HPER Gymnasium.
