Lady Rams get revenge against archrival FVSU

Albany, GA- After dropping the opening game of the series against Fort Valley State the day before, the Albany State Lady Rams didn't leave anything to question in Saturday's doubleheader. ASU bounced back to defeat the Lady Wildcats 7-2 and 11-0.

Albany State improves to 18-27 overall and 15-3 in the SIAC. With the wins, the Lady Rams claim the SIAC East Division title, and will enter the upcoming league tournament as the top seed. FVSU falls to 11-22 and 11-7 and will be the No. 2 seed from the east.

Game 1: Albany State 7, Fort Valley State 2

The two rivals could not find offense during the first four innings. Both teams put players on bases, but neither could score because of the teams' sound defense.

Fort Valley State got on the scoreboard first by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Rams answered with a giant rally of their own. Toni Coleman singled to score Malea Maye to cut their deficit to 2-1. Then, LaKymbreyia Davis stole home to tie the score at two. Chelsea Hicks followed that play with a single to send Coleman home. Ambrionna Atkism's double scored three more run, and Albany State led 6-2 after the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, ASU added an insurance run. Maye was able to score off a Lady Wildcat error to boost her team's lead to 7-2. FVSU could not score any runs in the top of the seventh for a comeback.

Maye led the Lady Rams with a game-high four hits. Hicks and Kayla Alexander each added two hits, and Atkism recorded three RBIs. Tiffany Massey (5-7) picked up the mound win.

ASU collected 12 hits and only committed one error for the game.

Game 2: Albany State 11, Fort Valley State 0

Albany State didn't record a lot of hits in the second game, but they took advantage of FVSU's miscues. In the bottom of the first inning, The Lady Rams used three hits, several walks, and wild pitches to build a 7-0 lead.

In the third inning, Keyanna Dawson hit a three-run homer to push the ASU edge to 10-0. Maye added another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Hicks (5-4) was the winning pitcher for ASU. The Lady Rams had five hits and no errors during the contest.

Albany State returns to action April 23-25 when it travels to Columbia, South Carolina to participate in the 2015 SIAC Women's Softball Championship. Opponents and game times will be announced on Monday.
