Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Rams end 17-year SIAC title drought with win over Benedict

Birmingham, AL- Simply put, Mecca Frost would not be denied…not this year.

Remembering her team's 67-64 overtime defeat to Benedict in last season's SIAC championship game, Frost led the way in the locker room, in the sideline huddles and on the court. Battling flu-like symptoms, the senior point guard scored a career-high 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 74-64 victory in the 2015 SIAC title game.

With the win, ASU claimed its first conference title since 1998. The Lady Rams have won 13 consecutive games and are now 19-9 overall. Albany State started the season with a 2-8 record.

Benedict falls to 23-6.

The two rivals battled closely for the first 10 minutes of the contest. After Artisha Holston gave Albany State a 13-12 lead, the Lady Rams went on a 14-4 run to take a 27-16 advantage with 6:12 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Frost with 5:28 remaining gave ASU a 31-19 lead.

With Holston, Keidra Green and Jillian Anderson getting into foul trouble and some missed free throws by the Lady Rams, Benedict was able to make a run before the half. When intermission arrived, Albany State held a slim 36-32 lead.

In the second half, Albany State opened with an 8-2 run to take a 44-34 lead. Benedict cut its deficit to 53-48 with 9:45 left in regulation. A 6-0 spurt by the Lady Rams pushed the lead back to double digits, 59-48, at the 7:50 mark. The Lady Tigers could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Green finished the game with 13 points, while Holston added 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Rams shot 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the field, 3-of-15 (20.0%) from three-point-range, and 27-of-42 (64.3%) from the free throw line. The ASU defense forced the Lady Tigers into 27 turnovers.

Albany State now advances to the NCAA South Region Basketball Tournament, which will be held March 13-16. Site and game times will be determined later today.
