Lady Rams advance to SIAC championship game

Birmingham, AL- Mecca Frost scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 79-64 victory over the Kentucky State Lady Thorobreds in the semifinals of the 2015 SIAC Basketball Tournament. With the win, ASU advances to the SIAC title game for the second consecutive year. The Lady Rams will once again face Benedict College, who defeated them 67-64 in last season's championship game.

Albany State has now won 12 straight games and improves to 18-9 overall. KSU, the #1 seed from the SIAC West Division, falls to 22-5.

Albany State found it difficult to slow down Kentucky State in the first half. The hot-shooting Lady Thorobreds seemed to make everything, shooting a blistering 54.5% for the half. KSU held its largest lead of the game at 36-27 with 3:40 left to play in the first half.

ASU would respond to with a spurt of its own. Keidra Green's three-pointer ignited a 13-4 run the Lady Rams used to tie the score at 40 with 37 seconds remaining in the stanza. Kentucky State's Jessica Jones made a trey with 21 seconds left, and Albany State trailed 43-40 at intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Rams trailed 49-46 until Green nailed another three to even the score at 49 with 14:21 left in regulation. KSU's Shayla Moore made a free throw to put K-State ahead 50-49 at the 13:24 mark. However, that would serve as the Lady Thorobreds' final lead.

With the score tied at 52, Frost went on her own personal 4-0 run to give Albany State a 56-52 lead with 10:50 left to play. Jillian Anderson followed with a couple of key baskets to help the Lady Rams push to a 69-59 advantage at the 4:38 mark. Down the stretch, Albany State was able to make enough free throws and put away the SIAC West Division #1 seed.

Artisha Holston finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Anderson netted 13 points, and Ieshia Young and Green added 12 points apiece. Young also had six rebounds, and Green made four three-pointers. Frost also recorded six rebounds and six assists.

The Lady Rams shot 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field, 5-of-8 from three-point range (62.5%), and 22-of-34 (64.7%) from the free throw line. ASU held the Lady Thorobreds to only 20% shooting in the second stanza.

Albany State will battle Benedict for its first SIAC tournament title since 1998 on Sunday, March 8 at Bill Harris Arena. The two teams split a pair of games during the regular season. The Lady Tigers won in Columbia, South Carolina 55-53 before the Lady Rams took a 76-69 overtime victory in Albany, Georgia. Tip-off  for the title tilt is scheduled for 10 a.m.
