Lady Rams’ season comes to an end in NCAA tournament

Jackson, Tennessee- Artisha Holston recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, but the Albany State Lady Rams saw their season come to an end with a 92-83 loss to Union University in the first round of the NCAA South Region Tournament. ASU, who entered the tournament as the eighth seed, has its 12-game win streak snapped and finishes the season at 19-10. Top-seeded Union improves to 27-3 and advances to the second round.
 
The two teams in engaged in a close contest, but attacked each other with different styles. Union's outside shooting helped the Lady Bulldogs build an early advantage. However, the Lady Rams would answer the challenge by getting points in the paint and making free throws.
 
Trailing 23-22 with 8:13 left in the first half, Keidra Green made a layup to give Albany State the lead. A three-pointer by Mecca Frost pushed the Lady Rams' advantage to 27-23 at the 7:14 mark.
 
Three minutes later, the Lady Bulldogs regained the lead, 34-33 with 4:37 left before halftime. Union had a 46-40 edge with five seconds left, but Mecca Frost hit a trey at the buzzer to send the Lady Rams into intermission only trailing 46-43.
 
Union kept its edge until Kyasha Wilson nailed a three-pointer with 8:22 left in the game to tie the score at 69. On ASU's next possession, Wilson made another basket to give the Lady Rams a 71-69 advantage with 7:48 remaining.
 
The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead for good, 73-71, at the 6:51 mark. The Lady Rams kept the game close down the stretch, but went cold from the field. Union hit enough free throws to put the game away.
 
Mecca Frost finished with 13 points and nine assists. Ieshia Young and Wilson each had 11 points and Zuri Frost added another 10.
 
The Lady Rams shot 29-for-68 (42.6%) from the field, 6-for-17 (35.3%) from three-point range, and 19-for-28 (67.9%) from the free throw line.
 
Amy Philamlee led Union with a game-high 34 points and 14 assists. Kelsey Risner added 27 points and DeAnna Thompson finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Seniors Mecca Frost, Jillian Anderson, and Brasheia Shepherd played their final game for Albany State.
