Lady Rams use second half surge to down Fort Valley State

Albany, GA- Artisha Holston recorded her third straight double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 74-64 victory over archrival Fort Valley State. With the win, ASU improves to 9-9 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC. The Lady Rams are currently second in the SIAC East Division behind Benedict College.
 
FVSU falls to 7-15, 6-6.
 
In front of a continuously growing homecoming crowd, the two state and conference rivals exchanged the lead and generated ties for most of the first half. With the score tied at 28 with 2:23 left in the half, Holston gave the Lady Rams the lead for good with two free throws. Sierra Foster added a basket, and Keidra Green made another free throw to help take ASU into intermission leading 33-28.
 
In the opening minutes of the second stanza, Albany State continued its run. A pair of free throws by Ieshia Young gave ASU its first double digit lead, 38-28, at the 17:09 mark. Leading 60-48, the Lady Rams used a 12-4 run to take a 72-52 advantage with a little under three minutes remaining in regulation. 
 
The Lady Wildcats made a mini run after Albany State sat its starters, but it was not enough to make a serious threat.
 
Green finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals and Young netted another 14 points for ASU.
 
The Lady Rams shot 23-for-70 (32.9%) from the field, three-of-eight (37.5%) from three-point range, and 25-for-36 (69.4%) from the free throw line. The team outrebounded FVSU 57-45 and forced the Lady Wildcats into 26 turnovers.
 
Albany State returns to action on Monday, February 2nd when it hosts the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers at the ASU HPER Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
