Lady Rams Basketball wins first game of the season

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Junior forward Artisha Holston recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to 68-63 victory over SIAC foe LeMoyne-Owen College. With the win, ASU gains its first victory of the season and improves to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
 
The Lady Magicians fall to 2-5, 0-1.
 
The Lady Rams started the contest with some torrid shooting in the first quarter. Keidra Green started the run with two three-pointers, and Albany State had an early 6-0 lead. At the 3:41 mark, a layup by Elesha Foster produced the team's biggest lead at 13-4.
 
LeMoyne-Owen made a run of its own and cut its deficit to 17-15 by the end of the period. In the second stanza, LOC took its first lead of the game, 25-23, off a jumper from Shantiera Miller with 4:06 left before halftime. The Lady Magicians still led 32-30 before a shot by Kayla Green at the buzzer created a tie at 32 at intermission.
 
The two teams continued to battle closely in the third quarter. Albany State was able to build a six-point advantage, 46-40, at the 4:39 mark after Holston's basket. However, LOC had regained the edge by the end of the period at 51-50.
 
In the final stanza, the Lady Rams still trailed 53-52 before LeMoyne-Owen used a 7-0 run to take a 60-52 lead with 8:04 left to play. ASU answered with its own 7-0 run and tied the game at 60 courtesy of two free throws by Holston.
 
Darriel Johnson's layup with 2:53 put LOC back in front with 2:53 left in regulation. Exactly 15 seconds later, Green connected on her fourth trey of the night to give the Lady Rams the lead for good at 63-62. Albany State finished the game with an 8-3 run.
Green led Albany State with a team-high 17 points. Kayla Green added 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
Albany State shot 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the field, 5-of-14 (35.7%) from three-point range and 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the free throw line. The Lady Rams outrebounded LOC 39-37.
 
Teresa Mays scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Magicians. Crystal Shields netted 15 points, and Maraja Johnson added 11.
 
Albany State returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 when it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the Stillman College Lady Tigers in another SIAC conference game. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (central time).
