Lady Rams beat FVSU on homecoming, clinch SIAC East title

Keidra Green had 22 points and seven rebounds in the Lady Rams' 60-51 win over Fort Valley State.
Box Score ALBANY- Sophomore Keidra Green scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 60-51 victory over the Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats. With the win, ASU, ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II South Region, improves to 17-5 overall and 12-3 in the SIAC.

In celebrating their annual homecoming, the Lady Rams, who beat FVSU 76-60 earlier this season in Fort Valley, also clinched the SIAC East Division title. Albany State will be the number one seed for the upcoming SIAC tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.

Fort Valley falls to 12-13, 9-6.

The two teams engaged in a low-scoring duel during the first half. Albany State went on an 8-1 run capped by Green's layup to take a 20-11 lead with 7:42 left in the stanza. However, Fort Valley State ended the half on 7-2 run of its own, and ASU only led 22-18 at intermission.

In the second half, Fort Valley State took the lead at 36-35 with 8:40 left in the game. The Lady Wildcats held the lead until the 1:38 mark when Kourtney Alexander gave the Lady Rams a 49-48 advantage. The Lady Wildcats went up on their next possession, 50-49 with 1:21 remaining in regulation.

With 53 seconds left after a Lady Ram timeout, Green made a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Lady Rams a 52-50 lead they would never relinquish. Albany State outscored FVSU 11-1 in that span to pull out the victory and send the huge homecoming crowd into frenzy.

Alexander finished with 13 points for the game. Artisha Holston pulled down a team-high 13 points to go along with her four points.

The Lady Rams shot 18-53 (34%) from the field, 4-18 (22.2%) from three-point range, and 20-30 (66.7%) from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Lady Wildcats 43-42, forced them into 24 turnovers and held the team to 30.4% shooting.

Albany State returns to action on Monday, February 24th when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to face the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers. The Lady Rams won the initial meeting 60-57. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
