Golden Rams hold off GSW to win third straight

Albany, GA- Sophomore Davetom Odom scored a game-high 28 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to a 69-62 win over the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes. With the win, ASU wins its third straight game and improves to 3-2 overall. GSW drops to 2-2 on the season.
 
Trailing during the early part of the first half, Albany State took the lead for good when Odom hit a layup to give his team 18-17 lead at the 9:52 mark. Three-pointers by both Odom and
Larry Bullock helped the Golden Rams build a 35-22 advantage they would take into halftime.
 
In the second half,
Jeremy Whitmore hit a jumper to give ASU a 37-22 lead with 18:10 to play. The Golden Rams continued to lead by double figures until the Hurricanes cut their deficit to 45-38 at the 14:04 mark. A basket by Chris Wheeler and back-to-back steals and layups by Douglas Storey restored ASU's double figure lead at 51-38 with 11:54 left to play.
 
Georgia Southwestern made another run to cut the lead to 66-62 with over a minute to play. However, a clutch three-pointer by Odom at the shot clock buzzer sealed the victory for the Golden Rams.
 
Bullock finished 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. He also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Earl Farnum led the team in rebounding with six, and Storey added five more.
 
The Golden Rams shot 28 of 56 (50.0) from the field, four of six 66.7) from the free throw line, and 9 of 21 (42.9) from three-point range. They also recorded nine steals and committed only 10 turnovers.
 
The Albany State defense also held GSW's star player Damien Leonard in check. Leonard, averaging 21.3 points coming into the game, was held to eight points on 2 of 13 shooting from the field, including 1 of 10 from three-point range.
 
Albany State returns to action on Tuesday, December 2nd when they travel to Milledgeville, Georgia for a rematch with Georgia College. The Golden Rams won this season's initial meeting 67-66 in Albany. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
