Box Score 1 Three Albany State University Golden Rams have been selected for player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) after their outstanding performances against Wingate University on Sept. 10.
Senior quarterback Stanley Jennings was named Offensive Player of the Week, and junior wide receiver Ronnie Tubbs was named Newcomer of the Week, and junior lineman Darvel Nelson received Offensive Lineman of the Week honors helped the Golden Rams to a 49-28 victory over the Bulldogs in the Dr. Jospeh Winthrop Holley Memorial Game in Albany. The three offensive powerhouses led the “Gold Rush” offense to 427 yards of total offense on the day.
A Marietta, Ga. native, Jennings completed 17 of 30 passed for 307 yards and four touchdowns, including a 53-yard touchdown pass to Tubbs. Tubbs, a Yazoo City, Miss. native, caught six passes for 136 yards and scored three touchdowns. A Franklin, Ga. native, Nelson anchored the ASU offensive line that produced 427 total offense yards.
Larry Whitfield, a defensive back from Albany, Ga., received an honorable mention recognition after leading ASU's "Dirty Blue" defense with nine tackles and a sack.
The SIAC Defensive Player of the Week was Corey Robinson, a linebacker from Miles College, who had 15 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in Miles' 13-6 win over Concordia College. Cade Berryman, the kicker at Kentucky State University, received Special Teams Player of the Week honors after kicking three field goals, four PATS and 450 kickoff yards against Lincoln University.
Jennings, Tubbs, Nelson and the Golden Rams will take on the Valdosta State University Blazers on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Albany State University Coliseum.
