Golden Rams fall to Lane College

ASU's Larry Whitfield pulls down Lane player for one of 12 tackles.
The Lane College Dragons upset Albany State University 26-24 in Jackson, Tenn. on Oct. 8, and defeated the nationally-ranked Golden Rams for the first time in school history.
Lane scored the first points of the game on their first possession on a one-yard run by quarterback McKinsley Marbury to cap off a 15-play, 55-yard drive with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Rams marched 60 yards on nine plays and answered later in the quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run by Nathan Hoyte to tie the game at seven points each.
Early in the second quarter, Marbury hit William Golston with a 17-yard touchdown pass to score but Ryan Bullock’s PAT attempt was blocked, giving the Dragons a 13-7 lead. With 8:32 remaining before the half, the Golden Rams took their first lead of the game when Stanley Jennings hooked up with Octavius Staton on a 23-yard touchdown pass and Tory Torstenson’s PAT gave the Rams a 14-13 edge. Lane took a 20-14 lead with a two-yard touchdown run by Marbury to cap off an eight-play, 80-yard drive with five minutes on the clock. The Golden Rams answered once again with Hoyte’s six-yard touchdown run to take a 21-20 halftime lead.
Lane scored the only points of the third quarter on Marbury’s rush from five yards out to give the Dragons a 26-21 lead.
The Golden Rams added three points on the scoreboard when Brandon Hamilton nailed a 40-yard field goal to cut Lane’s lead to 26-24 early in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Lane held on for the victory.
Marbury led the Lane offense with 142 passing yards and a touchdown, and 142 rushing for three touchdowns for the Dragons. ASU’s Nathan Hoyte rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns, while Larry Whitfield and Bruce Ryles tied for a game-high 12 tackles.
The Golden Rams will return to Albany, Ga., to face the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the ASU Coliseum in Albany, Ga.
