Fairfax, Va.- Diverse: Issues in Higher Education has released its 2016 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars list. Albany State football player Cedric Ashe has earned a spot on the listing.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars.

In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and community activism.

Ashe, a native of Columbus, Ga., has been named to football list’s second team. He played for the Golden Rams’ football program from 2013-2016. During his four years, Ashe was a member of ASU’s 2013 SIAC championship team and played in three conference title games. He was also a member of three SIAC East Division title squads.

In the realm of academics, Ashe, who recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science, generated a 3.40 grade-point average and was also a student in the Velma Fudge Honor’s Program for four years. Ashe is also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society for Student-Athletes (Eta Chapter). He served as the president of Albany State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the 2015-2016 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges list.
